This painting is inspired by the South Downs in West Sussex, the painting shows a view of the foot of the Downs with a path leading through the woodland heading towards the brow of the hill. Using minimal colours like earthy browns and hints of reds and adding the complimentary colours of greyish blues and greens which are representing the Beech and Ash tree trunks , with their cold, smooth and wet bark. This painting with its almost cold colours and bare standing trees, portrays the late winter, the mulched earthy colour leaves slowly dissolving into the wet dark soil. Its quiet and still here and the ground is cold and damp to sit on this is the north side of the Downs which is more steep to climb to the top, woodlands tend to get less management here as it is hard to access them, however this is great for our wildlife and these indigenous trees of Beech, Ash, Oak, Yew, Box and Whitebeam they can grow more naturally and have little impact by humans. However it can leave the woodland more dark and tangling with many young trees competing for light but to me it breathes a tiny bit of wildness which is so precious to have now in the UK.
