This painting is inspired by the South Downs in West Sussex, the painting shows a view of the foot of the Downs with an autumn path leading through the woodland heading towards the brow of the hill. Colours of red, yellows and pinks with touches of cool colours pale blues and greens portrays the autumnal feel. The cooler colours representing the trunks of the trees, mainly Beech and Ash, with their cold, smooth and wet bark also pale in colour. This is the north side of the Downs which is more steep to climb to the top, woodlands tend to get less management here as it is hard to access them, however this is great for our wildlife and these indigenous trees of Beech, Ash, Oak, Yew, Box and Whitebeam they can grow more naturally and have little impact by humans. However it can leave the woodland more dark and tangling with many young trees competing for light but to me it breathes a tiny bit of wildness which is so precious to have now in the UK.
